Chapter 7

Hannah

My body felt heavy, as if something was weighing me down. Vague shadows and unidentifiable images ran through my mind as I struggled to form some sort of coherent thought.

“Hannah?”

I stirred, Silas’s deep voice penetrating my haze.

“Wake up, love. I’m right here.”

I pried my eyes open and blinked.

Silas smiled down at me. “Welcome back.”

I opened my mouth to speak, but the words got caught in my dry throat.

“Here.” Silas produced a glass of water complete with a straw.

I opened my mouth and sucked down a long pull of water, reveling in the cool liquid. “Thank you,” I said as I glanced around at the unfamiliar bedroom. The walls were standard beige, but the ceiling was at least twelve feet high and the floors hardwood. And the window looked out on a wrought iron balcony. A vague recollection of the night’s events flashed in my mind, and a shiver ran down my spine. Then I sat straight up. “Thea. Where is she?”

Silas reached up and circled my wrist with his fingers. “Smoke is doing everything he can to trace her whereabouts. The moment he knows anything, he’ll let us know.”

I glanced around, frantic. “But she was taken. Right? That’s what happened?” My memories were fuzzy, but I was pretty sure I hadn’t dreamed that.

“She was. And we’ll find her, too. One way or another. Smoke won’t let us down.”

I sat there, my insides churning. “We have to do something more. I have to do something.”

“Hann, you already are. You’re healing, regaining your strength after the accident. It’s the best thing you can do right now.”

I sucked in a hard breath as the accident came roaring back in flashes of confusion. I squeezed my eyes shut, doing my best to block it out. When I opened them again, I focused on his steely eyes. “Where are we?”

“A house in the Lower Garden District.” Silas tugged me back down and curled into me.

I stiffened, realizing for the first time I wasn’t wearing anything more than a skimpy tank top and cotton panties.

Silas froze. “Are you all right? Did I hurt you? Does your chest still hurt?”

“What? No. I—” Crap. Had I really had a piece of metal in my chest? I lifted the cover and glanced down at myself. My skin was as smooth as it ever was. Not a scar in sight.

“It’s the wolf blood,” Silas said quietly, wrapping his arm around my center and tucking me in close to him.

“Wolf blood?” I asked, wondering if I’d had some sort of transfusion. Beyond the metal debris being lodged in my chest, everything else was vague.

“Yes. It healed you.” His clean, soapy scent filled my senses. And just like that, all other thoughts flew from my mind. How I’d survived the car wreck didn’t matter. Not when Silas was in bed next to me and I was wearing almost nothing, my back pressed up against his chest, his hand splayed on my bare stomach.

I swallowed. “Uh, Silas?”

“Yes, love?” He nuzzled my neck with soft kisses.
